I will never forget that afternoon in 1978, my dad and myself watching Muhammad Ali and Leon Spinks boxing on TV in the highly publicised heavyweight boxing match of all time. I was 13 years old and a very big fan of Ali. I enjoyed the bonding experience with my father, as we have had many before and many since. But I can't tell you how devastated I was when Ali was defeated, I couldn't believe it. This cant be for real, I remember cutting out the newspaper article. I would read it and look at the picture and just couldn't imagine my boxing hero not winning. It took a long time for that 13 year old boy to get over that.
Boxing for me was an introduction to competitive sports. I would watch for the boxing news on the sport channel and hbo boxing. Some friends had boxing equipment like boxing gloves, shoes and even a boxing bag. I think we were the ones that invented boxing kung fu style and kick boxing. We never went to youth boxing clubs, but would have been good there. Sports like boxing have fitness requirements that are very high, you must be in excelant shape for fighting.
